FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. . .

LIBRARY DIRECTOR RETIRES

After 17 years of service, Director Ellen Riboldi retired effective June 1, 2013. In Ellen’s notice to the Trustees, she expressed that “it has been an honor to serve the people of Marshfield.” The Trustees congratulate Ellen on a well-deserved retirement and thank her for the many years of service. Until such time a new director is hired, all inquiries should be made to Chris Woods, Head of Reference at malib@ocln.org and 781-834-5535.

TRUSTEES PRESENT SPACE NEEDS TO SELECTMEN

The Library Trustees made a presentation at the June 3 Selectman’s meeting about the library’s need for building improvements and additional space. The current library building opened in 1984 in a converted supermarket. Due to very little maintenance over the years, the building is showing its age. Marshfield’s population has grown to more than 25,000 but the library’s square footage has not expanded to meet the town’s need. The library’s 18,000 square foot space simply is not adequate anymore. The area of greatest need is for the Children’s library to expand. The Children’s space of 3,100 square feet is cramped quarters for children and families. The Trustees presented the children’s room challenges including jammed shelving, limited seating and study space, shelves at inappropriate heights and no space for children’s programs.  The Trustees proposed to the Selectmen adding space to the library by expanding into the adjacent 4,000 square foot area. This would allow the children’s department to expand into the existing program room, nearly doubling its space. Should the Selectmen grant the library the additional space, it would become a new program room for library and community use. Two other organizations are also vying for space at Library Plaza.  BOARD INCREASES FROM FIVE TO SEVEN MEMBERS

At the April Town Meeting, voters approved increasing board membership from five to seven, creating two openings. These volunteer positions are for a three-year term and applications may be obtained at the Selectmen’s office. Review of applications will be done by Trustees and final selection will be determined and appointed by the Selectmen. The Trustees are poised to take action to improve and hopefully expand the library building. We are looking for hands-on people, who will actively participate and collaborate

with the Trustees. Time requirements include one monthly meeting as well as committee and/or independent work. Questions about becoming a library trustee can be e-mailed to Chair Mary Ann Walsh at Marshfield4RLibrary@gmail.com.

STAFF CHANGES

May 2013 was a month of changes at the Ventress Memorial Library with some staff members transitioning to different endeavors and new staff being welcomed to the library team. Ellen Riboldi retired after many years of service and plans to travel, with perhaps Australia as a first stop. Wendy Ward left her position as Head of Children’s Services on May 22.  After 13 wonderful years of working with Marshfield’s youth, she has chosen to devote her time to family commitments. We will miss you, Wendy! Library Assistant Karen Delcourt is ably holding the reins until Wendy’s successor begins on June 17. Jennifer Malaguti comes to the Ventress from Holbrook Public Library, where she was Head of the Children’s Department. Please join us in welcoming Jennifer to our town’s library. Watch this space for a future “VV Interview” with Jennifer once she gets settled in. Library Assistant Jane Covitz re-located with her husband out of state, but plans to apply for a library job in her new neighborhood. In honor of Jane’s twelve years of service, we are reprinting her famous guacamole recipe in this issue of the Voice, “one for the road” so to speak. Library substitute and former volunteer Eileen Cedrone is joining the permanent staff as a Library Assistant. Eileen lives in Marshfield with her husband Jeff and daughter Brianna. After graduating from Holy Cross College in Worcester with her husband, (Ed. note: also the alma mater of VML Friends’ President Joyce Kinsman and this VV Editor.) they both pursued legal degrees. Eileen worked briefly as an attorney before becoming a stay-at-home mother for fourteen years. Now, she has returned to her first love: books. Thanks for choosing to join us, Eileen – you are an asset to the staff! In other changes, see Amy Rosa’s column on page 3 about her maternity leave, which began on June 1. Reference Librarian Carrie Tucker will perform the duties of Circulation Supervisor on a temporary basis until Amy’s return in September. Amy and husband Jon’s child will be our first “library baby!” Please stop by and say “hi” to our newest staff members and make them feel at home.

One for the road. . .

Summer is just about here and with that comes seasonal cook-outs and the question “What should I bring?” My go-to is usually guacamole. It’s easy, fresh, and healthy! It’s also quick, which is great. Whenever I need to make something for an occasion I always seem to go back to my favorite cookbooks like those by Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa), Giada De Laurentiis, and anything by America’s Test Kitchen.  “Food Network Magazine” has a new cookbook out called “1,000 Easy Recipes,” where I found quite a few great new recipes. Here is my tried and true recipe for guacamole (it makes about 3 cups).

JANE’S GUACAMOLE

3 or 4 ripe avocados (the dark, almost black ones)

Half of a small red onion diced

1 small jalapeno ,seeded and diced

2 plum tomatoes, diced

1 half cup of fresh chopped cilantro

1 can of black beans, rinsed (optional)

Juice of 1 lime

                          Salt and pepper to taste

Mash avocados with a fork or potato masher, add onion and jalapeno. Add cilantro and salt and pepper, mix in tomatoes and beans (I leave mine a little on the chunky side so I don’t mash too much.) Serve with tortilla chips and ENJOY!

A NOTE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. . .

We want to express our appreciation to the Friends of the Ventress Memorial Library and acknowledge all that this volunteer group does to support the library including conducting book sales for fund raising, sponsoring public enrichment programs, offering a best-seller rental book collection and providing discount passes to many of the area’s finest museums. In March 2013 the Friends gave the library a very generous donation (the second this fiscal year) to purchase books. The gift is especially welcome because the library’s book budget has been reduced by almost one-half. We are most grateful to the Friends for helping the library with this donation to the book fund and for all the group does to help the library year after year!

A “thank you” is due to the community as well because Town Meeting membership overwhelmingly supported library articles presented at the April meeting. The library requested a transfer of funds from a prior capital project account to be used for library improvements. As a result of the passing vote, $31, 241.31 has been transferred to the Facility Manager’s account for the sole purpose of library renovations. Also passed was a request to increase the library Board of Trustees member count from 5 to 7 positions. In the June “Ventress Voice” we will provide details of planned renovations and landscaping to improve the exterior of the building. More to follow next month. . .

To get a jump start on improving the library’s appearance, a group of three Marshfield High School seniors and two parents spent several hours here on Friday, April 26 volunteering for the “We Are Marshfield Project” service day. They worked hard painting the entryway and cleaning up the yard and grounds in front of the library. Ventress Library was selected for a team visit along with 26+ other locations around town that benefitted from the student volunteer service project. The Trustees would like to personally thank the student workers (Sarah Baker-Slater, Tommy DiGrigoli and Evan Jastremski) and parents (Corene Jastremski and Patti Epstein) for their most-appreciated  work of prepping, painting, raking and cleaning to improve the library. The Trustees invite participation as we move forward with plans to renovate the exterior and interior of the Ventress Memorial Library. CHILDREN’S CORNER

I will be leaving my position as Children’s Librarian here in Marshfield this month and wanted to say farewell to all of the wonderful families and children I have had the great privilege to know over the past thirteen years.  It has been a pleasure to watch your kids grow from babies and toddlers to young adults, and to be a part of their journey toward a love of reading and books.  I will miss the many friendships I have made here, and wish all of you and your families the best of luck.

The library is assembling a collection of electronic books accessible with your Marshfield library card to read on a computer or mobile device – even on your smartphone! We are adding titles that will help you with research, both academic and personal.

CD of the Month -- Seasons of My Soul by Rumer – POP

Sarah Joyce, known by her stage name Rumer, is an enormously talented singer-songwriter who is fond of ballads from the Sixties and Seventies and themes of love won and lost.  Her smooth as silk voice is often compared to Karen Carpenter, however, Rumer has a style uniquely her own.  Born in Pakistan, her family moved to England when Rumer was eleven.  She worked in several bands before releasing her debut CD Seasons of My Soul in 2010.  The artist has been mentored by composer Burt Bacharach and they collaborated on an EP Rumer Sings Burt Bacharach at Christmas.  Rumer also performed at the White House in a 2012 tribute concert honoring Bacharach and his lyricist Hal David.

The tune “Slow” opens the CD with enhancement from a Garritan harp and the heavenly quality of Rumer’s voice. The Garritan harp is actually a virtual instrument whose sounds are selected from a software library to produce music so realistic that it can’t be distinguished from a live performance. The up-tempo song “Am I Forgiven” is reminiscent of Bacharach’s arrangements that feature a Flugelhorn prominently in the mix.  In fact, you’ll hear the Flugelhorn in a number of tracks on the album.

The slow tempo R& B ballad “Aretha” tells the story of a young girl listening to her favorite artist on her headphones as she walks to school each morning.  Aretha’s music is a saving grace for the girl who doesn’t fit in at school and who can’t depend on those close to her for help.  Music truly offers guidance and healing in troubled times.

On “Thankful,” with the piano as its focal point, you’ll be reminded of the purity of Joni Mitchell’s voice and piano renderings on her Blue CD.  Rumer’s sentiment on “Take Me as I Am” also echoes Mitchell’s lyrics on Blue’s “California” on which she sings, “Will you take me as I am?”

The album closes with Rumer’s cover of the David Gates (Bread) theme song from the film “The Goodbye Girl.”  This song is a perfect match to showcase her beautiful voice and her love of classic, timeless musical compositions.

Rumer released a second CD “Boys Don’t Cry” in 2012 which is a collection of songs from the Seventies originally written and performed by male singer-songwriters.  The artist has been featured on the cable program “Live at Daryl’s House” where she and musician Daryl Hall performed an impeccable duet of the Hall and Oates classic “Sara Smile.”

Hopefully Rumer’s career will soar as high as her magical voice and talent for writing evocatively emotional songs will take her.

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK APRIL 14 – APRIL 20

Come celebrate National Library Week at the Ventress Memorial Library! National Library Week is celebrated from April 14, 2013 until April 20, 2013. This is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use. Every day across the country, libraries open their doors to everyone: students, parents, seniors, teachers, writers, artists, job seekers, entrepreneurs, readers, gamers, movie lovers and travel buffs. The theme this year is Communities Matter. We will be giving out bookmarks and stickers for the kids. Head to the library during National Library Week to see what's new and take part in the celebration!

CHILDREN’S CORNER

Spring Storytimes are ongoing in the children’s room.  Please check the website or pick up a flyer in the children’s room for more information.

We also have three additional events for children scheduled this April.  On Saturday, April 13^th at 10:30 a.m. we have a read to a dog program.  Children can sign up beginning April 1st for a ten minute slot to read to Arabelle, the German Shepherd, a graduate of Dog B.O.N.E.S. reading partner program.  On Wednesday, April 17th at 10:30 a.m., Farmer Minor will bring the world’s most famous pig, Daisy, to the library for the Pig Out on Reading Program.  Sign up for the Pig Out on Reading program also begins on Monday, April 1^st.  Finally, singer/guitarist Mama Steph will perform on Saturday April 27^th at 10:30 a.m. for preschoolers and their parents/caregivers.  No registration is necessary to attend Mama Steph’s performance

12^th ANNUAL BOOKS IN BLOOM IS MARCH 30!

The Yise Gardeners and the Ventress Library Staff will be presenting their 12th annual Books in Bloom on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come and enjoy this "Sign of Spring"; an eagerly anticipated yearly event where talented designers interpret their favorite books in flowers. Designs are by members of the Yise Gardeners, the garden club which meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Marshfield's YWCA, and the library staff. There will be a raffle, a “Popular Prize” voted upon by the attendees, and a book sale of wonderful used gardening books. Come early for the best selection! Light refreshments will be served. This is a free event, open to the public; no tickets are required. The library and program room are handicapped accessible.

Again this year, The Yise Gardeners will be selling lovely Easter and Spring centerpieces and hostess gifts to benefit their Marshfield High School Scholarship fund.

Please plan to attend this flower-filled Spring day at the library!

CELEBRATING SAINT PATRICK AT THE VENTRESS

Ventress Library Cultural Series brings back its popular concert "Native Irish Music Returns"  on Saturday, March 9, at 2:00 p.m. Eamonn Sheehan will present a lively performance of authentic tunes from the Emerald Isle. Guitar and fiddle playing will accompany the singing. Again, this year's special guest is Irish music legend Patsy Whelan. (see www.patsywhelan.com for information).All ages are invited to attend this free concert. The program includes American/Irish favorites as well as authentic Irish folk tunes. Audience participation is encouraged!  Ventress Memorial Library Cultural Series programs are free and open to the public. No tickets  are required. Light refreshments are served at a post concert social hour. On Tuesday, March 19 Abington resident and professional genealogist Michael  Brophy will present a lecture and workshop "Paddy on the Net" about Irish-American Catholic genealogy from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Please visit www.brophygen.com for more information. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Marshfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Story times are ongoing in the children’s room.  We are offering Story Time on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. for 4 year olds on their own (a drop-in program), Tales for Tots on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:00 for children age 0-3 along with their caregivers (a drop-in program) and Story Craft on Thursdays at 2:00 pm for 5-7 year olds on their own.  This program requires registration.

Also, popular singer/guitarist Mama Steph will perform on Saturday, March 16^th at 10:30 a.m.  This performance is geared to preschoolers and their parents/caregivers.  The show is free of charge and no registration is necessary to attend.

If we can get our hands on a copy of it from our vendors then we will try and order it. Please feel free to keep checking back with our staff to see if we were able to order the item. We want to see our patrons happy, of course!

Pop CD of the Month

“Blak and Blu”

Gary Clark Jr. is a multi-talented guitarist, vocalist and songwriter who hails from Austin, Texas.  His style has been influenced by nearly every genre of music including blues, rock, jazz, soul, country and hip hop.

Clark, who began playing guitar at age 12, also plays trumpet, bass and drums. In his teen years, the artist became a fixture entertaining at Antone’s music club in Austin, where blues great Stevie Ray Vaughan honed his career and Stevie’s brother Jimmie Vaughan took Clark under his wing.  Since embarking on his musical journey, Clark has taken the stage with some veteran musicians including B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Sheryl Crow and Steve Winwood.

The CD, Clark’s first full length major label debut, opens with “Ain’t Messin’ ‘Round,” a rocker fueled by a buoyant bass line, brass section, and driving guitar riffs. “Travis County” is a bit of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and the Beatles’ “Back in the U.S.S.R.” rolled into one rollicking package.  For some hip hop style, listen to “The Life” and tune in to “Numb’ with its meandering fuzztone guitar for a sound experience reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix.  In fact, Clark covers the Hendrix song “Third Stone from the Sun” on the album and if you close your eyes you can almost be transported back to the Sixties.

Clark slows the pace down a bit on “Please Come Home,” a ballad that’s driven by the musical memories of Motown, a kicking rock guitar solo, and falsetto vocals in the style of Smokey Robinson.  The album closes with the Delta blues influenced “Next Door Neighbor Blues,” on which Clark plays acoustic guitar and drums.

In April, Clark will perform at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival in New York City.  Just like one of the tunes on the CD, “Bright Lights,” the future looks extremely bright for this chameleon musician who has listened attentively to many great artists and shaped their influences into a style that’s all his own.

ESL TUTORS NEEDED
Do you have one spare hour a week to help an adult learn English?
The Marshfield Ventress Library ESL tutoring program is in need of
more tutors to teach English as a second language. No previous
experience is needed - really the only requirement is to be fluent
in English! We have an immediate need for afternoon tutors, but
we often need tutors for evenings or weekends. The program
provides support and ESL teaching resources at the library. As
the tutor and learner get to know each other, the needs of the
student become more obvious and the tutor adjusts the lessons.
Besides teaching English, the tutor might help answer questions
that arise about such things as information received from a child's
school or an expression that mystifies the student. It is a rewarding
experience for all involved and is not a huge time commitment.
It is a good opportunity to help encourage, advance and integrate
these non-native speakers into the community. Anyone interested

in volunteering to be a tutor should contact ESL Coordinator Amy
