April 10 - 16 is National Library Week!

From the Director…
”First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate.”

“This year's National Library Week theme is ‘Libraries Transform,’ reminding all Americans that today’s libraries are not just about what we have for people, but what we do for and with people. Increasingly, libraries are places of creativity where people can meet to share a hobby, use a 3D printer, edit a video, or use software to record their own music. Libraries offer access to the tools and technology and training essential to the economic and cultural lives of their communities.”

We welcome you here at the Ventress Library anytime, but especially during National Library Week. Come on in and talk to the staff about your reading likes and dislikes. We can help you find your next read! Let us know about  programs you already enjoy here and ones you would like to see the library sponsor. We encourage your feedback, and always would like to know how you think your library can serve our community better. While you are here, linger to browse our print, non-print and magazine/newspaper collections. Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or cocoa in the reading area. We are here for you all the time, not just during National Library Week. Hope to see you at the library soon!!

Circulation Chat…
By Elisha Chandler, Head of Circulation Services, echandler@ocln.org

As a part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that your library experience is both productive and efficient, the Ventress Memorial Library now provides self-service checkout. The self-checkout does not replace our well-trained and friendly staff; it is an additional service that allows you, our valued patrons, the opportunity to bypass long lines at the Circulation Desk during peak periods if you wish. It allows you to checkout and renew books (provided the book is not on hold for another patron) at the same time. Located at the Circulation Desk, self-check is easy, quick and efficient. To use the self-check machine, you must have:
·         A valid Ventress or Old Colony Library Network library card (library account must be in good standing.)
·         Materials eligible to be borrowed, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, and select CDs (picking up items on hold and removing items from a security case still require visiting a librarian-staffed checkout station)
Follow the simple instructions on the screen, scanning your card and books yourself. After approving the transaction, you have the option to print a receipt telling you when the items are due. As always, if you need assistance, a library staff member will be happy to help.
