FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. . .

Trustees Appoint Acting Library Director
Ventress Memorial Library Board of Trustees appointed a veteran library employee as Acting Director. Chris Woods began her new role on July 1, and will serve until a permanent director is hired. Chris has a long history with the Ventress Library starting as a volunteer in 1991, under then-director Dennis Corcoran, writing and producing the “Ventress Voice” newsletter. She was hired as a part-time reference librarian in 1994, and then promoted to Head of Reference Services in 1996. Chris has made many contributions during her tenure including: creating and managing special events and the annual Veterans Day program; starting a classic book group; initiating and growing the Ventress Library Cultural Series over a 15-year period; handling the library’s publicity, social media and website functions; securing grant money to fund programs; troubleshooting computers; and teaching both staff and the public how to access eBooks and magazines on tablets and portable devices. As a steering committee member for Marshfield’s “Opportunities” lifelong learning program, she plans and teaches classes on various subjects for adults of all ages and leads cultural outings. Chris holds a master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons College and a bachelor’s degree in English from College of the Holy Cross. A 26-year resident of Marshfield, where she raised a family of three sons with her husband Kevin, Chris enjoys choral singing, cooking and, of course, reading! Feel free to contact her at the library at 781-834-5535 at cwoods@ocln.org or through www.ventresslibrary.org.

The Seaside Gardeners Beautify the Library
By Jaclyn Robinson, Library Assistant
As the Library Staff and Trustees continue with the plan to beautify the library, we would like to make special mention of a group that has been beautifying our surroundings for many, many years. As you enter the library and glance to the right, you will take note of the magnificent oil portrait of Adelaide Phillips. She was the most famous female opera singer in America during the 19th century, and made her home in Marshfield from 1860 until her death at age 47 in 1862. Every week, all year long, a member of the Seaside Gardeners of Marshfield creates a floral display to grace the demilune table beneath her portrait. This might be a seasonal holiday display, a lovely potted plant or a beautiful vase of cut flowers. We all look forward to seeing what new idea a member of this talented group will come up with, each and every Monday morning! Please take a moment to enjoy this long-standing tradition, and join us in thanking the Seaside Gardeners for their years of service to the patrons of the library.
