A Message from the Ventress
Library Board of Trustees
The
Trustees would like to keep the Marshfield
community abreast of ongoing projects and plans for improvements for the
library. We will give a quarterly update on our progress to keep the community
informed of some of the behind-the-scenes efforts taking place to offer Marshfield the very best
library we can.
Recently
you were informed of the Beautification Project to improve the grounds of the
library. The goal of this project is to clean the walkways, building exterior
and landscape of the library. We hope
this will set a warm and inviting atmosphere to entice more patrons to spend
time at the library. With the playground and skate park so close, including
time at the library can be a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
We are
diligently working on ideas to improve the children and teen areas of the
library. We recognize these areas are small, dark and inefficient to serve the
needs of the community, but with continued effort and support of the community
we hope to improve these areas to the best of our abilities.
In a
collaborative effort with the Library Director, Ellen Riboldi, we will continue
to offer programs to expand the knowledge and interest of patrons of all ages
at the library.
We
encourage the community to share their input as we work together to bring you

VENTRESS LIBRARY CULTURAL SERIES ANNOUNCES 2012-2013 PROGRAMMING

Tuesday, September
4, 6-7:30 p.m.,Tuesday Night Lecture, “Remembering Titanic: 100th
Anniversary,” John Horrigan. Free, no
registration or tickets required
Historical lecturer John Horrigan's talk about the RMS
Titanic's single, fateful voyage will be enhanced with a slide show
presentation. Learn about the special features that made Titanic one of the
most technically advanced ships of its time. Horrigan will explore the facts,
myths and legends surrounding Titanic and explain about how modern technology
is helping historians delve into the truth of Titanic's untimely end. There
will also be an exhibit of ship manifests, passenger lists, books, magazines,
and photos.

Through Time,” Piano

popular ragtime piano player Paul Carroll and his narrator Barbara Carroll who
expand their time period scope from Bach to Boogie Woogie. Jump on the magic
carpet on this musical journey through time!

Census: Chronicling the Great Depression into World War II,” Michael Brophy.

1940 census was released to the public
on April 2, 2012. Genealogist and researcher Michael Brophy shows how the
information can benefit your research and gives tips for accessing the data.

10, 2:00 p.m., Veteran’s Day Stories and Concert, featuring Marshfield’ own “Celtic Ks” and Civil War
historian Bill Dunn presenting: “Giving Thanks in Littletown – The Civil War
Story of Private William W. Randall.” Free!
This annual event
honors Veterans of our town and beyond. Patriotic music, local history stories
and memorial displays. Traditional flag cake and punch will be served!

20, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Tuesday Night Lecture, “North River
Shipwreck,” Paul F. McCarthy. Free, no
registration or tickets required.
Marshfield resident
Paul F. McCarthy, an amateur marine archaeologist and history buff will present
a lecture entitled "The Search to Identify a 19th Century Wooden Sailing
Ship Wrecked in the North River in Marshfield." Back by popular demand,
the lecture includes a Power Point presentation of wreck photographs as well as pictorial results of three years of research and references to the North River shipbuilding past. Local history at its best!

CHILDREN’S CORNER

Fall
Story Times will begin the week of September 17th. We will be offering: Tales for Tots: geared to infants – 3 yr olds
with a parent or guardian on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
mornings at 10 am, Story Time: geared to
4 year olds on their own on Monday mornings at 10 am, and Story Craft:
geared to 5-7 year olds on their own on Thursday afternoons at 2 pm. Tales
for Tots and Story Time do not require registration. Registration for Story Craft will begin on
Tuesday, September 4th in the Children’s room of the library. Phone registration is also accepted.
The South
Shore Conservatory will present its interactive program “Music and Me” for
children age 0-4 years old and their caregivers on Wednesday September 5th
at 10:30 am. Space in this event is
limited and sign up is required. Please
stop by the Children’s room or call Wendy Ward at 781-834-5535 for further
information.

Library Survey
The
Library is conducting a survey on patron satisfaction – that’s all of you! The
survey will be running until the end of September. Surveys are located at the
circulation desk, reference, and in the children’s room. Please fill one out
and return to the circulation desk. The survey is now up online on our website
and also on the library’s Facebook page. Fill it out in person or online at
your own convenience and let us know how we’re doing. Your input is highly
appreciated!

LIFELONG LEARNING
SIGN-UP DATES
The “Opportunities” Lifelong
Learning Steering Committee is hard at work planning course offerings for adults
of all ages. Courses will be available on E-books, photography, music, art
history, birding and a special series of speakers who will appear at The Bailey
for “Bailey’s Pub Chats!” Sign-up begins on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the Council on
Aging Kick-off Breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and a Saturday registration event at the
Ventress Library will follow on September 22, from 10-12. Mark your calendar!
