12^th ANNUAL BOOKS IN BLOOM IS MARCH 30!

The Yise Gardeners and the Ventress Library Staff will be presenting their 12th annual Books in Bloom on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come and enjoy this "Sign of Spring"; an eagerly anticipated yearly event where talented designers interpret their favorite books in flowers. Designs are by members of the Yise Gardeners, the garden club which meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Marshfield's YWCA, and the library staff. There will be a raffle, a “Popular Prize” voted upon by the attendees, and a book sale of wonderful used gardening books. Come early for the best selection! Light refreshments will be served. This is a free event, open to the public; no tickets are required. The library and program room are handicapped accessible.

Again this year, The Yise Gardeners will be selling lovely Easter and Spring centerpieces and hostess gifts to benefit their Marshfield High School Scholarship fund.

Please plan to attend this flower-filled Spring day at the library!

CELEBRATING SAINT PATRICK AT THE VENTRESS

Ventress Library Cultural Series brings back its popular concert "Native Irish Music Returns"  on Saturday, March 9, at 2:00 p.m. Eamonn Sheehan will present a lively performance of authentic tunes from the Emerald Isle. Guitar and fiddle playing will accompany the singing. Again, this year's special guest is Irish music legend Patsy Whelan. (see www.patsywhelan.com for information).All ages are invited to attend this free concert. The program includes American/Irish favorites as well as authentic Irish folk tunes. Audience participation is encouraged!  Ventress Memorial Library Cultural Series programs are free and open to the public. No tickets  are required. Light refreshments are served at a post concert social hour. On Tuesday, March 19 Abington resident and professional genealogist Michael  Brophy will present a lecture and workshop "Paddy on the Net" about Irish-American Catholic genealogy from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Please visit www.brophygen.com for more information. Free and open to the public. No tickets are required. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Marshfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

CHILDREN’S CORNER

Story times are ongoing in the children’s room.  We are offering Story Time on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. for 4 year olds on their own (a drop-in program), Tales for Tots on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:00 for children age 0-3 along with their caregivers (a drop-in program) and Story Craft on Thursdays at 2:00 pm for 5-7 year olds on their own.  This program requires registration.

Also, popular singer/guitarist Mama Steph will perform on Saturday, March 16^th at 10:30 a.m.  This performance is geared to preschoolers and their parents/caregivers.  The show is free of charge and no registration is necessary to attend.

Pop CD of the Month

“Blak and Blu”

Gary Clark Jr. is a multi-talented guitarist, vocalist and songwriter who hails from Austin, Texas.  His style has been influenced by nearly every genre of music including blues, rock, jazz, soul, country and hip hop.

Clark, who began playing guitar at age 12, also plays trumpet, bass and drums. In his teen years, the artist became a fixture entertaining at Antone’s music club in Austin, where blues great Stevie Ray Vaughan honed his career and Stevie’s brother Jimmie Vaughan took Clark under his wing.  Since embarking on his musical journey, Clark has taken the stage with some veteran musicians including B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Sheryl Crow and Steve Winwood.

The CD, Clark’s first full length major label debut, opens with “Ain’t Messin’ ‘Round,” a rocker fueled by a buoyant bass line, brass section, and driving guitar riffs. “Travis County” is a bit of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and the Beatles’ “Back in the U.S.S.R.” rolled into one rollicking package.  For some hip hop style, listen to “The Life” and tune in to “Numb’ with its meandering fuzztone guitar for a sound experience reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix.  In fact, Clark covers the Hendrix song “Third Stone from the Sun” on the album and if you close your eyes you can almost be transported back to the Sixties.

Clark slows the pace down a bit on “Please Come Home,” a ballad that’s driven by the musical memories of Motown, a kicking rock guitar solo, and falsetto vocals in the style of Smokey Robinson.  The album closes with the Delta blues influenced “Next Door Neighbor Blues,” on which Clark plays acoustic guitar and drums.

In April, Clark will perform at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival in New York City.  Just like one of the tunes on the CD, “Bright Lights,” the future looks extremely bright for this chameleon musician who has listened attentively to many great artists and shaped their influences into a style that’s all his own.

ESL TUTORS NEEDED
Do you have one spare hour a week to help an adult learn English?
The Marshfield Ventress Library ESL tutoring program is in need of
more tutors to teach English as a second language. No previous
experience is needed - really the only requirement is to be fluent
in English! We have an immediate need for afternoon tutors, but
we often need tutors for evenings or weekends. The program
provides support and ESL teaching resources at the library. As
the tutor and learner get to know each other, the needs of the
student become more obvious and the tutor adjusts the lessons.
Besides teaching English, the tutor might help answer questions
that arise about such things as information received from a child's
school or an expression that mystifies the student. It is a rewarding
experience for all involved and is not a huge time commitment.
It is a good opportunity to help encourage, advance and integrate
these non-native speakers into the community. Anyone interested

in volunteering to be a tutor should contact ESL Coordinator Amy

VENTRESS LIBRARY CULTURAL SERIES CONTINUES

Saturday, February 9 (snow date February 16), 2:30 p.m., Saturday Concert, “Solo Pieces for the Piano: Chopin and Schubert,” with pianist Sarah Haera Tocco. Free, no tickets required. Refreshments! CONCERT POSTPONED UNTIL SATURDAY, FEB. 16 DUE TO EXPECTED SNOW CONDITIONS. . .

Since her debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York as an accompanist in 1986, Ms. Sarah Tocco has maintained a very active concert pianist career. Her recent CD with the music of Brahms, Chopin and Schubert is a favorite among music enthusiasts around the globe.  Known for her poetic and intellectual interpretation of Romantic era, Ms. Tocco brings the artistry of solo piano to the stage with confidence and grace.  Currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at Boston University, Ms. Tocco holds both MM and BM from Manhattan School of Music in New York.

Saturday, March 9, 2:00 p.m., Saturday Concert, “Native Irish Music Returns!” Native Irish musician Eamonn Sheehan returns with his friend Irish music legend Patsy Whelan. Free, no tickets required. Refreshments!

We welcome back Eamonn on guitar and vocals and Patsy on fiddle and vocals for foot stompin’ authentic Irish music and some American-Irish favorites as well. Sing-a-long encouraged. Bring the family.  A Marshfield tradition!

Tuesday, March 19, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Tuesday Night Lecture, “Irish-American Catholic Genealogy,” Genealogist Michael Brophy. Free, no registration or tickets required. Program is funded by a Marshfield Cultural Council grant.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day month, we bring back professional genealogist and lecturer Michael Brophy, this time to focus on researching Irish ancestors. Bring your questions and memories of loved ones!

Winter/Spring story times have begun.  Please pick up a flyer in the children’s room or check out our website for more information. Singer/guitarist Mama Steph will return on Saturday, February 16^th at 10:30 a.m. to entertain the preschool set and their parents/guardians.  No registration is necessary to attend Mama Steph’s performance.  We are still hoping to add more participants to our Grade School Book Discussion Group.  If your child is in 4^th or 5^th grade and would like to join our group, please contact Wendy Ward at 781-834-5535.

Pastel Painting Workshop Huge Success

Our favorite artist Gregory Maichack came back to the Ventress Library with his new pastel painting workshop, “Monet’s Mirror” on Thursday January 31, 2013. The workshop had a full class signed up with 18 people in attendance. We hope to be able to have Mr. Maichack back again next year!

A NOTE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. . .

Happy New Year Ventress Library patrons! We have been very busy over the last few months trying to prepare wonderful changes to the library for 2013. As you can see from the outside of the library, we had some shrubs removed, ground area cleaned and trees trimmed. Our goal is to improve the visibility of patrons entering and leaving the library and improve visibility of drivers.

In the coming year we would like to see further improvement to the outside of the library. Ms. Noonan has been working with contractors to obtain bids to power wash the building, walkway and pillars, reface and paint the building surfaces, improve lighting and landscape the grounds. The “Got-Books” bin will be relocated to the right of the library onto a grassy area, thereby opening two additional parking spaces closer to the library and improving parking area appearance.

As you can see, we are diligently working behind the scenes of the library. Changes are coming to provide all Marshfield residents an improved Ventress Memorial Library.

LIBRARY CULTURAL SERIES PROGRAM CONTINUES

KING PHILIP’S WAR PROGRAM IS TUESDAY, JANUARY 15

Curious about King Philip's War?  Come to the Ventress Memorial Library in Marshfield on Tuesday, January 15^th (snow date January 22^nd), at 6:00 pm to hear historian Edward Lodi talk about the uprising of Indian tribes against the English. In Curious Incidents in King Philip’s War he has gathered together thirty fascinating and for the most part little-known stories about the tragic conflict which, though it began here in our own backyard, quickly spread throughout all of New England to became the bloodiest war ever fought on American soil. Some of the incidents discussed are New York’s invasion of Connecticut, a war hero accused of witchcraft, another captured by pirates, the terrible vengeance wreaked upon Major Walderne, the strange ordeal of a teenage soldier, what a grandmother forgot while baking bread, Silverheaded Tom, and the parson the Indians mistook for a demon. Lodi begins his talk with a brief overview of the war. Edward Lodi is the author of a number of other books, including Women in King Philip’s War, Ghosts from King Philip’s War (which contains stories of hauntings and mysteries), and Murder at Anawan Rock, a mystery novel set in the present with a plot dependent for its solution upon incidents from King Philip’s War. He welcomes questions during and after his talk; a book signing follows. The talk is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

“FLUTE SONGS FOR A NEW YEAR” IS SATURDAY, JANUARY 26

The Ventress Library Cultural Series will present the flute concert originally scheduled for January 12 on a new date of Saturday, January 26. Flutist Orlando Cela will present "Flute Songs for the New Year" at 2:00 p.m. He will educate and entertain the audience with polished renditions of classic flute solo pieces and provide instruction on the history of the flute and flute music. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Cela started playing flute at a very early age. As a flutist, conductor and teacher,  he embraces all aspects of music from Vivaldi's Double Concerto to Indian classical music. The concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are required. Light refreshments will be served. The library and program room are handicapped accessible. Treat yourself to a creative, refreshing and relaxing start to the New Year with beautiful music!

CHILDREN’S CORNER

Our 2013 Winter/Spring Story Times will begin the week of January 14^th.  Once again, we will be offering the following: TALES FOR TOTS – geared to infants – age three and their parent caregiver on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings at 10 a.m., STORY TIME – geared to four year olds on their own on Monday mornings at 10 a.m., and STORY CRAFT – geared to kids age 5-7 on their own on Thursday afternoons at 2 p.m.  Tales for Tots and Story Time require no registration to attend.  Children must register for each session of Story Craft.  Registration for the first session of Story Craft begins on Monday January 7^th in the children’s room of the library.

We are looking for new members for our grade school book club.  Kids in grades 4 and 5 are welcome to join.  We meet every four – six weeks and the participants choose the books we read.  Please contact Mrs. Ward in the children’s room at 781-834-5535 if you would like to join us.

PASTEL PAINTING WORKSHOP BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

Our favorite artist Gregory Maichack is coming back to the Ventress Library for a new pastel painting workshop. This year he will be presenting “Monet’s Mirror: A Pastel Workshop,” which is a hands-on workshop for adults with all materials included. The workshop will be on Thursday January 31, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Space is limited and sign-up will be required. Sign-up will begin on Thursday January 10. FOCUS ON INSTRUMENTS – THE VIOLIN

CD of the Month “Music from a Farther Room”

Artist: Lucia Micarelli

Lucia Micarelli, an exceptional violinist, began playing the instrument at age three and attended Julliard and the Manhattan School of Music. She has toured with Chris Botti, Josh Groban and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  Micarelli blends popular and classical music in an emotional and electrifying style.  She has portrayed street musician Annie Talarico for three seasons on the popular HBO series “Treme,” a drama set in post-Katrina New Orleans.  “Annie” is a violinist who jams with other performers equally as passionate about their craft to help restore a sense of normalcy to a city nearly devastated by the hurricane.  Her character has evolved from a street performer to a professional musician and vocalist with her own band now landing club dates and a recording contract. 

Micarelli’s CD “Music from a Farther Room” paints an intricate portrait of her beautiful style of playing.   The selections on this 2004 release, produced by Josh Groban, range

from the classical music of Ravel and Sibelius, to popular compositions by David Foster, Freddie Mercury and David Bowie.  You can hear the raw emotion of her violin in her rendition of “My Funny Valentine” by Rodgers and Hart.  Accompanied only by piano, this is a poignant version of a classic tune.  Also outstanding is “To Love You More” written by David Foster and Junior Miles, which is featured as a single selection and an encore track paired with Freddie Mercury’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”  Chris Botti’s CD “Live in Boston” features the violinist on “Emmanuel,” a brilliant duet with the trumpeter and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  Micarelli shows a jazzier side on the soundtrack to Season One of “Treme” where she is featured on a couple of tracks including Jelly Roll Morton’s “New Orleans Blues.”

You’ll have a pleasant musical journey listening to the different musical styles a talented performer can express with an instrument.

FROM THE DIRECTOR. . .

November is “Family Literacy Month.” The library will present two programs to encourage you to enjoy books and reading with your family: Saturday, November 24, 1 p.m. Storyteller Big Ryan and Thursday, November 29, 6:30 p.m.  EBook author and Marshfield resident Lisa Vallier.

Marshfield Historical Society has an exhibit on loan about archaeological artifacts found in Marshfield. It is located in the display case outside the Historical Room in the library.

Thank you to Marshfield DPW for removing shrubs at the library’s crosswalk to increase visibility for drivers and pedestrians.

LIBRARY CULTURAL SERIES PROGRAM CONTINUES

The Ventress Memorial Library Cultural Series will present a free Veterans Day
program on Saturday, November 10, at 1:00 p.m., to include a concert of patriotic music by Marshfield’s “Celtic K’s.” The program begins with an appearance by North Marshfield resident Eugene Jackson, who will be honored for his work as one of the elite Tuskegee Airmen during WWII; film clips will follow. Featured speaker is Marshfield resident and historian Bill Dunn who will present a local history lecture entitled: “Giving Thanks in Littletown: The Civil War Story of Private William W. Randall.” Barry Cornwallwill reprise his reading of the poignant “Sullivan Ballou Letter” followed by aviolin solo of the haunting “Ashokan Farewell” and a concert of patriotic music through the centuries. Flag cake and punch will be served during a social hour
following a patriotic sing-a-long. The program is free and open to the public.
No tickets are required. Light refreshments will be served. The library and
program room are handicapped accessible.

Books in Boo! was great fun for all here at the library from October 22 to October 31. Prizes were won, displays were gazed at, and Jacky O’Lantern was always found no matter where she hid in the library! Did you sadly miss this wonderful event? Photos have been put up on the library’s Facebook page which you can access from our main webpage. Check out all the fun we had!

Museum Passes

Did you know you can get discounted passes to various museums in the area? The library offers passes you can reserve for our Marshfield residents. Some of our popular passes are the Boston Children’s Museum, Science Museum, MFA, Heritage Museum and Gardens and Plimoth Plantation. DISHIN’ FROM THE KITCHEN

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Cooks note: This is a soft "cakey" cookie.  It goes great with coffee, tea or cocoa.

Enjoy the bounty of the fall season!!

Ingredients: 1 cup canned pumpkin; 1 cup sugar; 1/2 cup vegetable oil; 1 egg; 2 cups all purpose flour; 2 tsp baking powder; 1 tsp cinnamon; 1 tsp ground ginger; 1/2 tsp salt; 1 tsp baking soda; 1 tsp milk; 1 tsp vanilla; 2 cups milk chocolate chips

Combine pumpkin, sugar, vegetable oil, and egg; mix well. In separate bowl stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger and salt. Dissolve baking soda with milk and stir in; add flour mixture to pumpkin mixture, mix well.  Add chocolate chips and vanilla.

Drop by spoonful onto greased cookie sheet. Bake about 10 minutes at 350 degrees (until lightly browned).

       First Annual Books in BOO!

Are you ready for some SPOOK-TACULAR fun in October? The library staff is eagerly anticipating the staging of our first “Books in BOO!” From October 22 until October 31, we will be featuring some of our favorite Halloween books throughout the library. Come and enjoy some scary, creepy and delightful displays!

And then. . . .to add to the excitement. . .each day, somewhere in the library, hidden in a deep, dark corner will be. . .”Jacky O’Lantern!” Here is how it will work: find “Jacky”; tell us how Jacky is dressed that day; write down the title of a book nearby; and enter our drawing. Adults, teens and children are welcome to participate. Children may enter each day. They will receive a small prize and be entered into a drawing for a daily prize. Adults and teens may also enter each day to receive one grand prize for each age group at the end of the show.

Don’t miss “Books in Boo!” This promises to be the start of another great tradition at the library -- Happy Halloween!!

LIBRARY RECEIVES ANONYMOUS $500 DONATION

The library recently received a very generous anonymous gift of $500 to be used as needed. The money has will be applied to the severely reduced book budget to buy new materials. A big “thank-you” goes out to this donor for his/her kindness and generosity!

Saturday, October 20, 2:00 p.m., Saturday Concert, “Jazz at the Ventress.” Ed Sorrentino quartet. Free, no tickets required. Refreshments!

Come hear percussionist Ed Sorrentino and fellow jazz musicians play audience favorites with a few surprises. Special guest is jazz vocalist Melodee Savage-Roderick who has performed professionally on Broadway, off-Broadway, in national tours and in regional theatre as a singer, actor and dancer. She has received critical acclaim for her performances of Duke Ellington’s music. Relax on a Saturday afternoon with the mellow sounds of jazz!

CHILDREN’S CORNER

Fall story times are ongoing.  We have three story times: Tales for Tots, Story Time, and Story Craft.  Only Story Craft requires registration.  Please see the webpage or pick up a flier in the children’s room for more information.

Singer/guitarist Mama Steph will be performing on Saturday, October 13^th at 10:30.  This performance is appropriate for young children and their caregivers, is free of charge and requires no registration.

The library will participate in Trick or Treat Marshfield Center again this year.  Children’s librarian, Wendy Ward, will hold a “Not too spooky story time” at 1 p.m. in the program room of the library to kick off the event.

JENKS, JAZZ AND JIVE

This month I'm highlighting several new CDs which feature superb performances from musicians who specialize in trumpet, electric bass guitar and classical guitar.

Chris Botti - Trumpet - "Impressions"

Botti, the world's largest selling jazz instrumentalist, has created a beautiful compilation of romantic melodies from around the world.  Botti's musical artistry on the trumpet is mesmerizing in that the instrument seems to take on vocal qualities.  Botti's selection of guest artists who perform on this album are diverse yet perfect choices to complement the tone of the album. "Losing You," written by Randy Newman, features Vince Gill's poignant, tender vocals and closes with a crystalline trumpet solo that leaves the listener soothed by Botti's passionate interpretation.  Andrea Bocelli performs on "Per Te" ("For You"), a gentle and meditative composition written by Botti and David Foster, multi-talented producer, songwriter and musician. Foster and jazz great Herbie Hancock also guest as pianists, and Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) adds vocals and guitar on the album's closing tune "What a Wonderful World." Listeners will love to linger on this soothing, gentle musical journey.

Marcus Miller - Electric Bass Guitar - "Renaissance"

Marcus Miller, a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, has worked for many years as a session musician.  He has won numerous Grammy awards as a producer for other artists, and now with "Renaissance" has released a top-notch CD of great grooving jazz which he produced, arranged and composed.  Miller  plays a Fender electric jazz bass and specializes in the "slapping the bass" technique - sounds like the bass guitar heard on the soundtrack from the television series "Seinfeld." The CD includes an ensemble of players featuring alto saxophone, trumpet, guitar, piano, percussion and drums.  Miller takes the electric bass to new levels, and like Chris Botti, gives the instrument its own voice as if it's the lead vocal.  Miller shines on a layered bass solo on the Jackson Five's classic "I'll Be There" - you'll really hear the versatility and sensuality of this instrument.

Sharon Isbin - Classical Guitar - "Guitar Passions"

World renowned classical guitarist Sharon Isbin honors her guitar heroes who are a diverse group of classical, rock and jazz musicians.  The selections on this album, inspired by South American and Spanish roots, will leave you totally immersed in the brilliance and intensity of the classical guitar.  Isbin collaborates with jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan and rock guitarist and vocalist Nancy Wilson of Heart.  On "Allegro" Isbin and rock guitarist Steve Vai soar to great heights as they blend their classical and electric guitars flawlessly. Perhaps the most interesting collaboration is on "O Presidente" with Paul Winter featured on soprano saxophone.

Listening to these performers, who are masters of their chosen instruments, is an incredibly satisfying and captivating experience.  I hope you too will find enjoyment in these passionate performances by these tremendously talented artists.
